Puerto Vallarta International Airport is in the process of reopening after closing temporarily due to Hurricane Simon’s hit over the weekend.

“As of Tuesday, October 13, all types of operations, including commercial flights, will be allowed to resume,” said PVR in an X post.

PVR said the resumption of flights will depend on each airline, and passengers are advised to contact their airline directly to confirm the status and schedule of flights before heading to the airport.

Hurricane Simon pounded western Mexico with more wind and rain yesterday after tropical weather systems caused five deaths and damage in Pacific coastal towns and resorts.

The eye of the Category 2 hurricane remained offshore as its outer bands of winds and rain hit communities between the Sierra Madre and the Pacific Ocean near Puerto Vallarta.

Simon had maximum sustained winds of 155 kph late Monday and was expected to remain a hurricane through midweek, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said Monday evening. It was slowly approaching the western Mexico coast, where heavy rainfall may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides before landfall possibly late Friday.

In Puerto Vallarta, workers removed wooden panels from boarded-up storefronts and businesses reopened Monday as rains eased.

Proof Of Guardianship Law

Meanwhile Mexico’s new child-protection legislation could impact the paperwork parents and caregivers need to pack for family vacations.

According to the Cancun Sun, the legislation brings in mandatory protocols for Mexico hotels and resorts to follow before any tourist service is provided. Hotels and resorts must check guest documentation to confirm the relationship between young guests and their parents or guardians. Without that documentation, hotels and resorts must deny services and notify authorities.

With no clear timeline yet for implementation, the Cancun Sun says parents are advised to pack a copy of their child’s official birth certificate that lists both parents. Single parents or legal guardians should have certified copies of custody arrangements or guardianship paperwork. Meanwhile adults travelling with minors who are not their legal guardian must have a notarized letter of consent signed by the child’s legal parents, confirming the relationship and authorizing the trip, according to the report.
