The state of Quintana Roo is nearly full, reports the Director of Tourism regarding the current holiday season. Darío Flota Ocampo, head of State Tourism, highlighted the significant amount of travelers arriving in the state.

Flota said that over the weekend, nearly every destination across Quintana Roo has reported an increase in tourists. He pointed out that in particular, the Cancun International Airport consistently averaged 550-plus flights per day.

“The flights are arriving full,” he said. “Since Thursday, it has been very difficult to find a ticket on all routes in Mexico to Cancun. We are having a record number of flights,” he explained.

He also pointed out the vast arrival of travelers on local roadways. “Long ago, we did not see a large number of cars from the entire Yucatan Peninsula, from Tabasco to Campeche, but it is developing very well this season,” he said.

Flota mentioned that around the state, a majority of hotels have reported 80 percent occupancy rates, adding that national tourism predominates, although there were at least 350,000 North Americans known to be vacationing in Quintana Roo during the past week.

“Almost all destinations in the state are very busy from Holbox to Chetumal. It has been an excellent holiday season with figures that have not been seen for a long time,” he added.

In places such as Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres (Costa Mujeres), most hotels have recorded between 85 and 90 percent occupancy rates, said Jesús Almaguer Salazar, head of the Hotel Association.

He added that between 120,000 and 130,000 tourists are still here, vacationing between those three destinations.

“It is quite good. There are hotels that are fully booked and others at 90 percent and 85 percent,” he said.

“The truth is that it is a very good season in the three destinations. There must be between 120,000 and 130,000 visitors still here, mostly nationals since the North American vacation period is shorter, on average four-and-a-half nights,” he reported.

Almaguer added that the issue of sargassum is a situation that has not had the slightest impact since not all beaches are affected on a daily basis, and also since there was a small truce in the northern region over the holiday weekend.

Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, head of State Public Security, said the during the holidays, an additional 6,044 security elements were deployed around the state for Easter 2022.
