Loganair
Generations of passengers have relied on Loganair as more than just an airline

For over six decades, Loganair has been more than just an airline. It’s a lifeline to Scotland’s remote communities, a link between the islands and the mainland, and a trusted partner for generations of passengers. As we celebrate the 63rd year, we take pride in the moments that have defined the journey and shaped the commitment to service, sustainability, and innovation.

A legacy of service and connection

Since the beginnings in 1962, we’ve grown from a small regional operator into Scotland’s most essential air service and the UK’s largest regional airline, all while constantly evolving to meet the needs of the people and communities we serve. While the history is rich with moments of achievement, it’s the future that excites us most. At Loganair, we’re continuously pushing the boundaries of what’s possible—making travel more sustainable, convenient, and enjoyable for everyone who flies with us.

6 memorable moments in the 63-year journey

1. Shetland ponies return to Fair Isle (1976)

In 1976, Loganair helped bring the Shetland Pony back to Fair Isle after an 80-year absence. This heartwarming moment showcased the role in preserving the culture and history of the islands we serve. It was a perfect example of how Loganair is deeply intertwined with the communities and traditions of Scotland.

2. Inverness to Kirkwall: The longest-running route

For nearly 40 years, we’ve connected Inverness and Kirkwall, the longest-running commercial flight route. This vital link ensures that people living on the islands of Orkney can stay connected to the mainland, no matter the season.

3. A special delivery: Twins born on a Loganair flight (1982)

In 1982, something truly special happened aboard a Loganair flight when the Henderson twins were born mid-air on a flight from Tingwall Airport to Aberdeen. Their unique arrival (almost 40 miles apart!) marked a unique moment in the history. To celebrate their 40th birthday, we surprised Lynsey and David as they returned to Sumburgh Airport following a trip to Bergen, cementing an unforgettable bond between the airline and the twins.

4. The world’s shortest flight: Westray to papa westray

In the Orkney Islands, we operate the world’s shortest commercial flight, lasting just 90 seconds! While passengers are airborne for less time than it takes to make a pot noodle, this essential service connects the two remote islands that would otherwise be cut off.

5. Around 6 million Caramel Wafers served onboard

We love to make the passengers feel at home. So, it’s no surprise that we’ve served over 6 million Tunnocks Caramel Wafers—one of Scotland’s favourite treats—on the flights. It’s these small touches that make flying with us a bit more unique and special.

6. Leading the way in sustainability: All-electric turnaround in Stornoway

Loganair is committed to reducing its environmental footprint. We’ve introduced an all-electric aircraft turnaround at Stornoway Airport, marking a significant step toward greener aviation practices. We’re continuously working to make flying more sustainable, and this is just one example of how we’re embracing technology for a cleaner, greener future.

3 Voices from Loganair

The journey has been shaped by the dedication of the people who’ve worked with us over the years, and their commitment to both the airline and the communities we serve continues to inspire us every day.

The Future: Innovation and sustainability

As we look to the next chapter, we’re excited to continue evolving. The commitment to sustainability will remain at the forefront, with even more eco-friendly initiatives and fleet upgrades planned. We’re also enhancing the customer experience, making travel with Loganair even more seamless and enjoyable. The dedication to connecting Scotland’s island communities and beyond remains strong, and every step we take is focused on maintaining the bonds that have made Loganair a trusted name for over six decades.

Here’s to the next 63 years of service, connection, and community.
