The Jakarta–Tokyo Narita route saw the largest growth with Dreamliner flights

Airlines operating the three Boeing 787 variants (the 8, 9, and 10) will collectively have an average of 1,160 round-trip long-haul flights daily in April, based on Cirium Diio data. The type is now so popular that more than one in four long-haul services is on it. Nearly three-quarters more such flights are on the 787 than the Airbus A350, which entered service four years later in 2015.

Naturally, multiple new routes are on the type. Among others, American Airlines from Chicago-Madrid and Royal Jordanian between Amman and Washington Dulles use the 787-8. Gulf Air's new Bahrain to London Gatwick link uses the 787-9, as does Air Canada to Manila and Virgin Atlantic to Toronto.

United Airlines will begin flying the 787-9 between San Francisco and Adelaide in December, along with Hong Kong to Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City in October.

The 787's top long-haul routes: April

The following table summarizes all such links with 90 or more one-way flights (i.e., an average of three daily). Only airport pairs that cover at least 2,650 nautical miles (3,050 statute miles; 4,908 km) were examined.

Of course, the specific details may vary at other times, as would the results if city pairs were analyzed instead. Many routes fell just short of being included, but that's the tradeoff when a specific limit is imposed.

While Los Angeles to Tokyo Haneda is number one, London Heathrow to Delhi was first last April but is now eighth. The UK link now has 103 takeoffs on the Dreamliner in the current month, down from 153 a year ago.

The reduction is for two reasons. First, the exit of Vistara, which flew daily on the 787-9. Vistara merged with Air India in late 2024, which has not grown 787-9 flights on the route due to the A350-900, which has its latest cabins. Second, British Airways—which exclusively deployed the 787-8 last April—now operates the A350-1000 and 787-8.

How it has changed in a year

While 15 routes made the cut in April, only 12 did in the same month last year. In April 2024, Jakarta to Tokyo Narita, Tel Aviv to Newark, Tel Aviv to New York JFK, and Tokyo Haneda to Sydney did not have at least 90 one-way 787 flights. Now they do.

The most significant increase was between Jakarta and Narita, whose Dreamliner takeoffs have risen from 47 to 90 one-way because of Japan Airlines' increase.

In contrast, London Heathrow to San Francisco, which was on the list, has dropped off. In the current month, the 787 has 33 one-way flights on Virgin's 787-9s.

It fell from 90 last April when Virgin deployed the variant twice daily, and United did so daily (787-9). United operates the 777-200ER on the route for now, but the 787-9 will return in May.
