The new system introduces biometric checks — including facial scans and fingerprints — for all travellers crossing external EU borders

The official launch of the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES), a significant step towards digitising the borders of 29 European countries. The new system introduces biometric checks — including facial scans and fingerprints — for all travellers crossing external EU borders.

While the rollout began this weekend, the implementation of EES will continue progressively over the next six months. During this period, more border points will begin using the system, and the number of passengers providing biometric data will steadily increase. So far, reports indicate that operations have remained smooth, which is expected given that only a limited number of locations are currently active.

ABTA continues to maintain close communication with the UK Government, the EU, and key overseas transport hubs to monitor the rollout and ensure that the latest updates are shared with members. This is part of ABTA’s ongoing effort to prepare the travel industry for EES through guidance, resources, and communication.

In recent weeks, ABTA’s EES advice page on abta.com has received over 150,000 visits, making it the second most-viewed page on the website. Meanwhile, social media updates have reached more than 330,000 views, reflecting strong public interest in the new travel procedures.

ABTA has also provided clarity and reassurance through the national media, with more than 200 media mentions over the past week, including coverage across BBC national and regional broadcasts. In a recent statement, ABTA emphasised that while EES may initially slow border crossings, the system will ultimately enhance efficiency and streamline travel.

Members are reminded that they can access ABTA’s latest insights on EES and the Government’s communications toolkit through the ABTA Member Zone, and the topic will also be discussed at WTM London.

Additionally, ABTA is pleased to announce the appointment of Edward Byrne to the ABTA Board, succeeding Jamie Gardiner as the representative for members with an annual Principal turnover below £50 million. ABTA extends its thanks to Jamie for his dedication and service, and confirms that Daniele Broccoli will continue his role on the Board.
